Kashipur- 17th January, 2015: Manthan- the annual finance summit was hosted by IIM Kashipur on 17th January, 2015. This year the themes were “High frequency trading- regulation and challenges, growth challenges in BSE, Valuation of e-retail learning and risk management for 21st century”. The bigwigs of the industry graced the campus with their presence so as to share their experiences in the market. The speakers of the occasion were

The event started with the lighting of the lamp by the guests. Thereafter the event kick started with Ms. Rana Usman’s keynote speech and a presentation on ‘Use of algorithms in high frequency trading’. The second keynote speaker for the day was Mr. Nayan Mehta. His young and enthusiastic demeanor was welcomed by the students; he further elaborated the challenges in handling one of the oldest stock exchanges in the world; BSE. Thereafter there was a panel discussion involving Mr. Anuj Jain, Mr. Satish Kottakota, Mr. Alpesh Porwal with Prof. K.N. Badhani of IIM Kashipur as the moderator. The topic of the discussion was “Risk management for 21st century managers”. During the discussion, the panel discussed the growing significance of the understanding of risk profiles of various securities for managers. Finally,there was a keynote speech by Mr. Mohit Kabra (CFO, Makemytrip) who is seen as the posterboy of India’s new age entrepreneurship. He shared his enormous experience in the industry while he was working with companies like PepsiCo, Colgate and Kohler amongst many others. He talked about the sustainability of e-commerce valuation of retail learnings. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Kunal of IIM Kashipur.

Excelsior – PAN India Competition organized by IIM Kashipur

IIM Kashipur organized the first edition of Excelsior – A Multi-Domain Annual Management Fest of IIM Kashipur.

Excelsior in Latin means “ever upward”. In today’s world of cut throat competition, one needs to do the things differently yet persistently.  The wave of success follows the wave of hard and smart work. The dynamic business environment is pushing the business leaders to their limits.  Rightly said that these days there is nothing like competitive sustainable advantage! One needs to continuously adapt to the ever changing external environment and yet be competitive in the variables of control.

Excelsior ’14 was a microcosm of the corporate world where one was required to compete in an extremely tough environment to analyse corporate cases, play simulation games and emerge as a winner for survival! It was an amalgamation of six fields – Finance, marketing, consulting, operations, HR and IT.

Excelsior saw the coming together of the various clubs and committees of IIM Kashipur. The following competitions were held under this umbrella: 1. Infosys Auto Capek – an IT White Paper Competition 2. Bloomberg TraderX – a Finance Trading Competition 3. Mahindra Consilio – a Consulting Case Study Competition 4. Excelsior’14 witnessed participation of around 3000 students from various institutes in India and some from abroad. Participants competed for a total of INR 250,000+ worth of prizes and PPIs from reputed organizations like Infosys, Bloomberg and Mahindra & Mahindra. The rigour and excitement was multiplied as the various rounds of competition progressed in each event; the enthusiasm peaked during the final showcase of talent and knowledge held on campus on 9th March, 2014.

The intensity of the mega IIM Kashipur management fest would live up to its name- Excelsior – ever upward!!

On the eve of Republic Day, SPIC MACAY Chapter of IIM Kashipur concluded a grand event which witnessed performances by virtuosos like Pandit Bhajan Sopori, Shri Suchit Narang and Pandit Kalamandalam Amaljith.

This event also marked the beginning of the SPIC MACAY chapter of IIM Kashipur. SPIC MACAY is a voluntary movement that seeks to conserve and promote an awareness of our rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry amongst the youth of this country through focus on the classical arts.

Myntra at IIM Kashipur

The COO of Myntra.com, Mr. Ganesh Subramanian came to IIM Kashipur on Friday, 24th January. In a hearty interaction with the students, he recounted how Myntra, which started from a garage, climbed up the e-commerce ladder to become India’s largest online fashion store.

Myntra is fast growing into an e-commerce giant with over 1500 employees and over $75 million in funding from top investors like Tiger Global and Accel Partners. Recording a footfall of over 600 thousand each day, they have received prestigious awards like IAMAI’s Best Ecommerce Website of the year award for 2012 and Red Herring Global 100 award. Mr. Ganesh highlighted some important points along Myntra’s journey, right from its inception as a personalised t-shirt selling organisation in 2007 to capturing a 30% market share in online fashion e-commerce in 2013. He talked at length about the growing importance of continuously improving the supply chain of a company since it will be the differentiating factor that can tip the balance in favour of an organisation. He emphasised that always having an entrepreneurial and organic outlook towards business is the key since that is what creates a sense of goodwill and satisfaction among both employees and customers. In view of this, Myntra has collaborated with designers like Rohit Bal and Manish Arora to give shoppers the best and newest in fashion. Recently actor Hrithik Roshan launched his active lifestyle apparel and casual wear brand HRX exclusively on Myntra.

The students were keen to know Myntra’s future propositions and their strategy to delve into the huge semi-urban and rural market among other things, which Mr. Ganesh answered expertly. A thought from him that stayed with the students was,” If 8 out of 10 people reject your idea outright, I guarantee that it is a phenomenal one.”

Samanvaya 2011 – first edition of the HR Summit of IIMKashipur, was held on December 15th 2011. The event witnessed a congregation of eminent industry personalities in the field of HR, academia and students onto a platform to put forward and discuss their views on ‘Aligning Employee goals with corporate vision’. The discussion revolved around on how to ensure employee engagement and motivate employees to align their respective roles with the mission, vision & goal of the organization. Mr. Aquil Busrai, CEO-Aquil Busrai Consulting and Former HR Director of IBM, delivered the keynote address. Dr Devi Singh, Mentor Director-IIM Kashipur and Director-IIM Lucknow, Prof. Roshan Raina, Dean-IIM Lucknow and Prof Manoj Anand, Convener-IIM Kashipur taskforce, addressed the gathering. Veteran HR professionals from Dabur, Tata Motors, HP, Videocon, IDBI, APC, Titan, IGL, to name a few, constituted the audience. Mr. Aquil Busrai, in his keynote address, shared his views that Attraction, Retention and Training (ART) as the key ways to improve employee engagement and align their goals with the corporate vision. Mr. Busrai put forth the idea of ‘Take My 40 Hours’ as an initiative by the industry persona to spend 40 hours in an year, an equivalent of 5 working days, on a business school campus to give the required inputs to nurture the future leaders. Talking of retention, he shared an instance where 30% of employees leaving a company gave the reason of poor growth prospects, while a same fraction of people staying with company said it’s for higher growth prospects. The keynote address was followed by corporate luncheon, buzzing with an electrifying level of interaction amongst the guests. Thereafter, in the panel discussion that ensued had Mr. R S Yadav, VP-HR, IGL and Mr. Atul Asawa, VP, Flexituff as the panelist’s who shared their insights and experiences on employee engagement. Many guests expressed their delight while attending the event, first of its kind in the region, and affirmed that this first step will go a long way in benefitting the industries, especially of Uttarakhand and UP.
